‘Dark in the Day’

I’m delighted to have a brand new short story – 'An End to Empire' - in this fab collection of spooky tales, edited by Storm Constantine & Paul Houghton!

Click here to order from Immanion Press

“In the blink of an eye, around the corner, The Weird is everywhere. It’s in the bird that turns out to be a fluttering newspaper, that white shoe left in a ploughed field, or the curdling smoke on the windscreen of a car, caused by the fast-moving reflection of clouds overhead. Normal is often weird and vice-versa. We’re used to weird dreams but what about the wide-awake weird? This collection celebrates evocative tales of oddness that span the genres of magic realism, the supernatural, the fantastical and the speculative.

Weirdness lurks beyond the margins of the mundane, emerging to dismantle our assumptions of reality. When we encounter strange intervals, our perception of the natural order is challenged and changed. It is perhaps in those moments, that we glimpse the hidden truth of all things.

Dark in the Day is an anthology of weird fiction, penned by established writers and also those new to the genre – the latter being authors who are, or were, students of Creative Writing at Staffordshire University, where editor Storm Constantine occasionally delivers guest lectures. Her co-editor, Paul Houghton, is the senior lecturer in Creative Writing at the university.

May 2015 - Guest blog: 'Writing The Weird'

Delighted to be invited to write a guest blog for Dr Wanda Wyporska, author of 'Witchcraft in Poland' – a few thoughts of mine on the subject of 'Writing The Weird'.

"One of my earliest – and happiest memories – is being read to by my grandmother. I curled into her lap as she accomplished the miraculous feat of wrapping her arms around me and holding the book at the same time. Since then I have associated being read to with being hugged..."

19.5.2013 - New blog interviews!

Two new blog interviews / reviews about the launch of The Palace of Curiosities – and how long it's taken to get here.

First up: Tim Diggles - Legend – Rosie Garland (aka Rosie Lugosi)

‘What has always amazed me is that you have so many different aspects to your work. You write in your name Rosie Garland; you write and perform as your alter-ego Rosie Lugosi; you are the lead singer of The March Violets; you are a Goth icon; a legend in the world of burlesque; star of Woman’s Hour and women’s magazines; are there any other facets we don’t know about?’

Next up: Yatterings - More than a sideshow – Rosie Garland's The Palace of Curiosities.
  • 'An assured and magical novel. Her poetic output provides the writing's lyricism and her involvement in cabaret and Goth gives her an eye for the strange.'

Disturbing The Beast: Women Of Weird Fiction launch

Blackwell's Bookshop
University Green,
146 Oxford Road,
Manchester M13 9GP

Wednesday, 8 May 2019 from 19:00-20:30

Join Bad Language for an evening of readings to celebrate Feminist Book Fortnight and the release of Disturbing The Beast, a brilliant brand new collection of weird fiction stories by some of the best women writers in the UK.

The short stories in Disturbing The Beast boast breath-taking prose and thought-provoking plots. The book is produced by Boudicca Press, a new imprint showcasing the work of leftfield female literary talent. The collection smashed its target on Kickstarter, and now you can hear those stories up-close and live - and buy a copy of the book on the night.

The fictional tales swerve mainstream, contemporary literature and provide something much more memorable, with subjects including lesser-talked-about female-centred topics such as sexual abuse, pregnancy issues and body image. Writers in the anthology include Kirsty Logan, Jane Alexander, Rosie Garland, Lorraine Wilson, Aliya Whiteley, Cheryl Powell, Carolyn Jess-Cooke, Caroline Steed and Sam Mills.

These films aim to highlight the rich creative diversity of our libraries, and pave the way for emerging artists to head to their local library for ideas and insight for their next big project.

‘Because goddess is never enough’ – revealing the new film poem, made in collaboration with filmmaker Jane Glennie.

Absolutely thrilled to announce this new film poem – created over 2021 in collaboration with amazing filmaker Jane Glennie. Inspired by the life of dancer and choreographer Tilly Losch, the film explores notions of erasure, strategies for persistence and the centrality of creative expression for the life of a woman in perpetual motion.

We are delighted with the reception the film is receiving! A list of film festivals is below.
