Disturbing The Beast: Women Of Weird Fiction launch

Blackwell's Bookshop
University Green,
146 Oxford Road,
Manchester M13 9GP

Wednesday, 8 May 2019 from 19:00-20:30

Join Bad Language for an evening of readings to celebrate Feminist Book Fortnight and the release of Disturbing The Beast, a brilliant brand new collection of weird fiction stories by some of the best women writers in the UK.

The short stories in Disturbing The Beast boast breath-taking prose and thought-provoking plots. The book is produced by Boudicca Press, a new imprint showcasing the work of leftfield female literary talent. The collection smashed its target on Kickstarter, and now you can hear those stories up-close and live - and buy a copy of the book on the night.

The fictional tales swerve mainstream, contemporary literature and provide something much more memorable, with subjects including lesser-talked-about female-centred topics such as sexual abuse, pregnancy issues and body image. Writers in the anthology include Kirsty Logan, Jane Alexander, Rosie Garland, Lorraine Wilson, Aliya Whiteley, Cheryl Powell, Carolyn Jess-Cooke, Caroline Steed and Sam Mills.

Rosie Garland: 'The Night Brother' - Reading and Book Signing

Location: John Rylands Library Historic Reading Room,
Deansgate,
Manchester M3 3EH
6-7pm
Free event

Introduced and chaired by Dr Xavier Aldana Reyes (Manchester Met).

Tagged ‘literary hero’ by The Skinny, Rosie Garland is an award-winning poet, novelist and singer with post-punk band The March Violets. With a passion for language nurtured by libraries, she started out in spoken word, garnering praise from Apples and Snakes as ‘one of the country’s finest performance poets’.
She is the author of Vixen, a Green Carnation Prize nominee. Debut novel, The Palace of Curiosities, won Book of the Year in the Co-op Respect Awards 2013 and was nominated for both The Desmond Elliott and the Polari First Book Prizes. Her latest novel The Night Brother (Borough Press) was reviewed in The Times as "A rich and ambitious tale set in late Victorian Manchester... Garland's prose is a delight: playful and exuberant. There are shades of Angela Carter in the mad world she creates... Full marks.'

Her most recent poetry collection, As In Judy, is out with Flapjack Press. She is half of The Time-Travelling Suffragettes. #gothfest17

Watch all the short films featuring four accomplished Manchester creative practitioners who have worked closely with libraries over the course of their careers.

Hear how libraries can support artists, writers, dancers, musicians and more to create original work, access valuable resources, gain practical support and inspire creativity.
These films aim to highlight the rich creative diversity of our libraries, and pave the way for emerging artists to head to their local library for ideas and insight for their next big project.

‘Because goddess is never enough’ – revealing the new film poem, made in collaboration with filmmaker Jane Glennie.

Absolutely thrilled to announce this new film poem – created over 2021 in collaboration with amazing filmaker Jane Glennie. Inspired by the life of dancer and choreographer Tilly Losch, the film explores notions of erasure, strategies for persistence and the centrality of creative expression for the life of a woman in perpetual motion.

We are delighted with the reception the film is receiving! A list of film festivals is below.
