Under the spiritual guidance of Mab Just Mab, prepare yourself for a burlesque journey into the history of all things hidden, featuring the witchcraft of Bella La Blanc, Blanche Boudoir, Lilly Vaudeville, Lilly Von Grimm and Melody Magpie. Salacious elemental spirit Spooky provides our Air/Fire Balance with feats you must see to believe. 17.45 – 19.15 Goth: The scene that wouldn't die!
£8 (£6 over 60s, £5 other concessions) / Conference Centre
It is now over thirty years since a definable gothic rock scene exploded. Inspired by Bauhaus, Siouxsie and and early eighties The Cure – it generated a vast, diverse and doom-laden world, characterised by the rock of The Sisters of Mercy, the more ethereal Cocteau Twins or industrial sounds of Nine Inch Nails or Marilyn Manson. Two of the most significant figures in the story - Andi Sex Gang (Sex Gang Children) and Rosie Garland (The March Violets), plus music writers John Robb and Natasha Scharf in a wide ranging appreciation of what still makes Goth so enthralling. Chaired by David Quantick.

Welcome to Convergence Twenty Chicago! We are extremely honored, dark denizens of the Internet, that our city has again been chosen to continue the fine once-a-decade tradition of being your hosts for a weekend you'll never forget! Sincere thanks to all who voted for Convergence Twenty Chicago.
The March Violets are one of those bands.
Formed in Leeds in the post punk era at the very start of the 80s, they were one of the 4 dark Northern Bands that are often blamed for starting the Gothic scene, The Danse Society, The Sisters of Mercy, The March Violets, and The Southern Death Cult. The Violets released a series of singles that still fill the darker dance floors around the world, the most played being "Snakedance" and "Walk into the Sun."
Three original members reformed in 2008 for a reunion, and since then the Violets have done a few rare concerts, headlined some festivals, and finally managed to write and record their first proper album.
They will be playing some old classics and some new ones from the Made Glorious album. Strangely enough, people who have seen The March Violets in this century say they sound exactly the same as they did back in the early 80's, the Violets agree.
The March Violets' appearance at C20 (their first C*) will mark their first time in the U.S. since 1987, and the first time ever with all three original members -- promising a rare performance from a legendary band that has actually managed to evolve, yet retain their original dark brilliance.
"Play Loud, Play Purple."

Absolutely thrilled to announce this new film poem – created over 2021 in collaboration with amazing filmaker Jane Glennie. Inspired by the life of dancer and choreographer Tilly Losch, the film explores notions of erasure, strategies for persistence and the centrality of creative expression for the life of a woman in perpetual motion.
We are delighted with the reception the film is receiving! A list of film festivals is below.

It's 40 years since The March Violets released our 1st 7" EP (seriously, FORTY).
So it’s a great time to announce that this tasty 5 CD Box Set is now up for pre order from Jungle Records!
The Palace of Infinite Darkness - In addition to all the singles plus all the extended versions, the box has six excellent BBC sessions, 23 tracks with 9 unreleased songs (also reissued as Big Soul Kiss 2LP yellow vinyl after a sold-out RSD release). Then there are two whole discs of unreleased demo sessions – one from the early period 1982-84 and another from 1985-87. Founder-member Rosie Garland recounts the band’s story in a 44-page booklet.

A wonderful experience – for the first time, I co-tutored a residential writing week for the prestigious Arvon Foundation! It was such a thrill to work alongside inspiring co-tutor Keith Jarrett and electrifying guest reader Jay Bernard.
A very special week. I won’t forget it.

Thrilled and honoured to have my poem ‘Now that you are not-you’ featured in this groundbreaking new anthology!
‘Mary Jean Chan and Andrew McMillan's luminous anthology, 100 Queer Poems, is a celebration of thrilling contemporary voices and visionary poets of the past. Featuring Elizabeth Bishop, Langston Hughes, Ocean Vuong, Carol Ann Duffy, Kae Tempest and many more.
Encompassing both the flowering of queer poetry over the past few decades and the poets who came before and broke new ground, 100 Queer Poems presents an electrifying range of writing from the twentieth century to the present day.’

I’m honoured – my essay ‘Don’t Fence Me In’ is included in this wonderful collection! (Nine Arches Press, ed Ian Humphreys)
‘What motivates poets in the 21st century? How do they find their voice? What themes and subject matters inspire them? How do they cope with set-backs and deal with success? What keeps them writing?
In Why I Write Poetry twenty-five contemporary poets reflect with insight, wit and wisdom on the writing life, each offering their distinctive take on what inspires and spurs them on to write poetry. Also - individual writing prompts to help you create your own new poetry.’
