Residential Writing Week: Queer Poetry
Going by the speed of queer zest

Monday June 27th - Saturday July 2nd 2022

Totleigh Barton
Sheepwash,
Beaworthy
Devon
EX21 5NS

Tutors – Keith Jarrett and Rosie Garland, with guest Jay Bernard

Let’s get ourselves a little moon cottage in Devon and dream the queer future we all want to see.
During this dynamic week, tutors Keith Jarrett and Rosie Garland will support and encourage you to develop your voice as a queer poet, alongside like-minded writers in an inclusive environment.
During workshops you’ll explore a wide variety of queer poetry from poets past and present, always with a focus on your own writing through lots of playful and powerful prompts and exercises. With plenty of time for discussion, questions and group work, there will also be opportunities for individual feedback from your tutors, where you’ll be offered guidance on ways to develop and craft your poems.
Expect fun, discovery and plenty of writing on this week for LGBTQI+ writers at any stage of their careers.

Arvon Foundation Masterclass: Writing the Gothic & Weird in Fiction and Poetry

Zoom Masterclass with Rosie Garland
Friday June 17th 2022, 11:00 - 13:00 BST

In 1974, Angela Carter said ‘we live in Gothic times’. It has never been more apt. From subculture to high culture, the Gothic can be found in art, films and literature today. Aimed at writers of fiction or poetry, or any point in between. So, with lantern held aloft in trembling fingers, explore the haunted labyrinth & discover the surprises within…
During this masterclass, Rosie Garland will draw on her experience as a writer of Gothic-themed novels and poetry as well as a career performing with cult Goth band The March Violets. From the fantastical & fearsome to the gorgeously ghostly, you’ll be introduced to a variety of literary Gothic treats. There will also be practical exercises to prompt writing and help you to craft your own Gothic tales.

The Masterclass will be delivered via Zoom webinar (11:00-13:00), so you can take the session at your own pace, without the pressure of having your video or camera on. Sessions are also recorded so if you are unable to attend live, you will have access to the recording for a month afterwards.
"These zoom opportunities are really helping to open my world and keep me inspired to write."
